Maratacht
Maratacht’s residential Gaeltacht summer course on Cape Clear Island is the real deal for any teenager with a grá for the sea, a curiosity about marine life, or just a love for adventure.
Located on a stunning offshore island in West Cork, surrounded by the wild Atlantic, days are spent kayaking, snorkelling, and paddleboarding. But it’s not all just messing around in the water – there’s a serious focus on marine issues too, so you’ll come away with a proper understanding of the ocean and its importance.
We cover marine and rocky shore ecology and how weather and climate change are shaping our world. You’ll dive into the social history of island life, getting a taste of what it’s like to live on Cape Clear with visits to local businesses to see how they make a living on an island.
You’ll research the economic impact of the ocean, from ocean trading / fast fashion to how rising sea levels are affecting coastal planning. It’s all about connecting the dots between the sea and the bigger picture.
It’s not all lectures and note-taking. There’s plenty of craic to be had, whether you’re exploring the island, learning new water skills, or just soaking up the Gaeltacht atmosphere. You’ll leave with new friends, a head full of knowledge, and a serious appreciation for the ocean.
If you’re a teen with a love for the sea then Maratacht is the place to indulge in that!
We use Gaeilge conversationally and in a supportive way.
All topics are linked to second level curriculum subjects of geography, history and Irish & UN SDG goals 13,14 & 15.
Outdoor & experiential as much as possible using kayaking, snorkelling, SUP, night paddle in bioluminescence, swimming, fishing trips, island history.
